Since the early generations of civilizations, there have been competitions between two opposing forces displaying athletic prowess and combative dominance, which have had no meaning except to entertain the spectators on hand to witness the sport. One of the oldest examples of a popular hand-to-hand combat sport is wrestling. Wrestling has roots back to the ancient Egypt, but became extremely popular in Ancient Greece where it was an Olympic Sport; people came from miles around to watch the best athletes compete in wrestling events. However, over time wrestling has branched off into many different styles that were sanctioned and more civilized. The most popular style in modern times is known as amateur wrestling.

Amateur wrestling, which combines Greco-Roman and Freestyle forms, is the most practiced style of wrestling these days. The wrestlers who represent their countries and compete in the Olympic Games are almost always amateur wrestlers. This sport pits two wrestlers against each other to see who can score more points. In the system, a wrestler is rewarded with points for takedowns, reversals, exposure and penalty points.

Amateur wrestling is always performed upon mats with a referee advising. The types used are padded with soft materials such as PVC rubber nitrile foam, or a closed cell and cross-linked polyethylene foam covered in a vinyl material. They are made with these materials because they are resistant to tears, are comforting for the wrestlers, and can absorb shock. Because amateur wrestling can be brutal and unforgiving for the body, hence the need for the mat, they are also required to wear equipment to lend them protection against the bumps and bruises.

Wrestling shoes are made to be light and durable. This way a wrestler can move his or her feet without any weight holding them back, and no worries about ripping them with the rough hits. The shoes come up to the ankle so they give the ankle support and do not give way when the wrestler is in a vulnerable position.

The equipment most popular in amateur wrestling is the singlet, their uniform. The singlet is a tight fitting, Lycra bodysuit that dons the colors of the team the wrestler, or maybe just the colors they want. This clothing is tight fitting so that the opposing wrestler cannot grab onto them for an advantage, and so the referee can see if a wrestler's shoulder is touching the ground or not.

Since the 1980s another popular form of the sport has developed in pop culture. This is known as professional wrestling, and is competed around the world to millions of adoring fans. The most popular professional wrestling company is World Wrestling Entertainment, run by Vince McMahon. World Wrestling Entertainment, like almost all outfits, is staged wrestling that mixes in storylines with the competition. It is often said this form is a male-oriented soap opera, even though many of the fans are also female.

Wrestling is one form of hand-to-hand combat that has survived for centuries. While it may look violent, most is well sanctioned and develops competitive athletes that respect their opponents. There has to be a reason why so many people have turned to wrestling as a form of entertainment throughout the many years it has survived. It is almost certain it is because of the enjoyment and amazement that it can provide.
